Brian Haggard's Crazy Quilt Retreat

I am, among other things, a quilt artist living and
working in Indianapolis, Indiana.
I keep myself busy creating original art in many media including
quilting, embroidery, photography, and altered art.
My “day job” is working with many clients as an interior
designer and mural artist.  For fun, I like to hit the antique shops and quilt stores looking for ideas and embellishments for my work.  The
fabric, buttons, lace, old photos, keys, clocks and watches found on these trips
are the inspiration for my art and will probably be seen on the next quilt.
I have always loved old buttons and have recently turned collecting them into a hobby of its own.  In fact, I am
currently president of the Indianapolis Button Club.  I love to share my creativity in the classroom and seeing the joy students experience as they create beautiful one of a kind pieces.

A Note About Our Retreat

I just wanted to give you a heads-up about the retreat.

What I want for you to know about me as a artist is that I don't use the usual methods of teaching.  My hope is to give you skills to create your own artistic view, not to be a copy of who I am.  The focus is to let the quilt piece become a work of art that is your self-expresion and your own creatity and says who you are and is what you want it to be.

There will be enough structure to the weekend so that you feel like you are learning but there will be LOTS of free time so that you can work at your own pace and devlelop your own style.  The environment will be fun and light-hearted.  I sincerely believe that your work is better when you're having fun.

I love the use of embelishment with items not always used in this kind of work.  I want your work to be unexpected--maybe even to you.  I want you to to leave the weekend confident that you can create a work of art on your own and be amazed as your skills evolve.

 Your friend,
Brian Haggard
